hot-button foods

I know you’ve got a list of foods you just don’t like. Mine includes licorice (or anything with fennel or anise), scallops, and octopus. My husband won’t touch celery, ginger, or cilantro. My brother prefers to keep a safe distance from tomatoes. And my father-in-law (a.k.a. the human garbage disposal) will eat anything but liver.

Most foods that turn us off induce the gag reflex for lots of others, too. So in the name of science I’ve come up with a fun (short, anonymous) quiz to see which foods really make us run for the hills. Give it a spin and I’ll post the stats soon! Also, if you think I’ve missed some important hurl-generating food, leave it in the comments and I’ll add it to the quiz.

Have fun!

Comments

  1. Just a thought, but I know a few people that can’t stand onions…might be worth adding it to the survey :)

  2. I feel bad for people with the weird soap-taste thing with cilantro. Cilantro is sooooo delicious! MOAR CILANTRO PLEASE!

  3. i pressed submit instead of next partway through! Turns out I’m not picky, except for the whole category of processed/artificial foods that I avoid these days–and shrimp & oysters.

  4. only two things I won’t eat – liver is one of them (chopped liver is good, but a big old piece on a plate, ew), and peas. Mixed in stuff they’re ok but a bowl of peas? Get away! Split pea soup is the worst, looks like someone already ate it.

  5. I would add mayo to the list of yum/yuck foods. It’s pretty polarizing for a lot of people I know, myself included.

  6. Grapefruit. I can always taste it. And meat on the bone is also a dealbreaker for me.
I don’t have words for how much I love eggs, but some strange people are really squished out by the idea of a nice runny egg, I’ve found moreso than hardboiled.
As an adult, I’m now finding things that repulsed me as a kid are really quite delish (V8, I’m looking at you).

  7. +1 on grapefruit. Completely poisons an otherwise delicious fruit salad. Just say no.

My addition: olives. Love olive oil, but can’t stand olives.

  8. Personally I can’t stand the texture of shrimp or beans. Shrimp pop and it makes me gag, and beans are gritty. Nasty!

  9. Okra There is no known reason for this plant to be on earth.

  10. Tartar sauce and olives are bad in all situations. Pickles are also bad.

  11. Brussel Sprouts and other bitter foods I cant tolerate due to being a “supertaster” It has to do with the number of taste buds you have and your threshold for bitter tastes. Additionally trigeminal nerve sensitivity plays a role in food preference. I cant do spicy or carbonated or some other specific foods/tastes. Love food…and even know why I have preferences!

  12. Okra is put on the Earth to be fried and as gumbo support. Otherwise, it has no use.

  13. Juliana Caton says:

I am also a super taster, spicy and carbonated are hard for me, but I love brussels sprouts (when cooked well)! Yum, they are crispy and buttery and delicious!
